What is gematria?

gematria is a system of numerical code used to discover hidden meaning in Bible verses and other text. It's been used for centuries in various religions, including Judaism and Christianity. The origin of the name "Gematria" is from the Greek word "gematri" meaning "geometry" or "measurement."

In Gematria each letter of an alphabet is assigned a numerical value, typically ranging from one to nine, creating an alphabetical code. Ancient Hebrew manuscripts used gematria to compare words and phrases with similar numerical patterns. By comparing the numerical values, it was believed one could gain insight into God's divine language or divine wisdom. This method has also been used in Christian mystics during Medieval times, with other cultures mixing numerology with astrology, Tarot cards, and alchemy to gain deeper understanding of the symbolism behind religious texts.

Today, Gematria is still popular among religious scholars who seek deeper meaning in sacred texts. The technique can be used to uncover hidden meanings that might not be noticeable on the surface interpretation. For example, by applying the assigned numeric values to each letter of a word or phrase, similar phrases can be found with matching numbers which offer parallels and interpretations to passages that might otherwise go unnoticed or misunderstood.
